An incalculable number of French postcards document the ruins of towns damaged by the Germans during World War I, especially in northern France near Belgium along the Western Front of the Schlieffen Plan. They are postcards of the small towns and cities, especially
between Lorraine and Alsace. They often depict the destruction of important buildings: churches, castles, museums, train stations, and town halls, and sometimes with a provocative caption so as not to forget the destruction of towns by German bombing or during the battle.
