In 1926, Woolf wrote two versions of an essay about certain films in the Arts and New Republic, and she was also engaged in pioneering film theories at a time when the approach to films was changing from dealing with them as simple amusement to considering them as the object of intellectual discussion. In her work, Woolf emphasized the unique artistic value which distinguished film from photography and literature. In this paper, I will examine the artistic vision shared by the Bloomsbury Group and underlying Virginia Woolf ’s film theory, and will clarify the nature of that vision.
