The purpose of this paper is to examine how female second language learners transform their identity as they seek to obtain new gendered subject positions in the new community as immigrants or expatriates. More specifically, this paper focuses on changes in the discursive performance of gender in the process of second language socialization. This paper reveals that the social constructionist theories help us analyze the issues and dilemmas faced by people who cross national and cultural boundaries as adults and (re)consider their own gendered identities.
